MISSION

The primary mission of the Portage County Senior Services Center is to provide socialization opportunities for all Portage County Senior Citizens without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, handicap or ancestry. The secondary mission of the Senior Services Center is to make the community aware of all of the current and future needs of older Americans. The Center also serves as a human link between appropriate services and the needs of the individual Senior citizen.

  • Also scheduled at various times throughout the month are card parties, additional bingo games, photography and craft classes, special luncheons and parties.

  • Charter bus trips are scheduled ten times a year. The 2007 bus trips are Mountaineer, Holmes County, New York City (2 nights), Ethnic Areas of Cleveland, Greektown Casino in Detroit, Put N Bay, Lake Erie Island; Atlantic City (2 nights), Mountaineer Casino and Kraynaks & Hartwood Acres for Christmas Lights.

  • For the ladies, the center sponsors a Red Hat Society group, the Senior Queens.  Monthly activities are scheduled.

  • For the gentlemen, the center sponsors a Black Hat Group.  Monthly activities are scheduled.

SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

The center sponsors the Portage County Farmers Market Senior Nutrition Program.  $16,000.00 is provided by the United State Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Department on Aging. The local Area Agency on Aging assists with the local program.

The Farmers Market Senior Nutrition Program distributes $12.00 worth of vouchers to approximately 350 area Senior Citizens during the months of June, July, August, September, and October.  The vouchers can be used only at participating Farmers Markets: Stahl’s, Hilgirts, Rufeners, Monroes Family Farm, Stotlers Orchard,
and two participants at the Haymarket Saturday markets in Kent, Chaykowski’s farm, and Richard Dirienzo’s Farm.

Area individuals who are least 60 years old, and who have an income of no more that 185% of the poverty level are eligible for the Farmer’s Market Program.

The Portage County Senior Services Center also sponsors “Safety Net” program for all area Senior Citizens, regardless of income. Old, donated cell phones are processed by Basic Communications in Streetsboro (verified that they work, and that they have access to 911) The phones are then given free of charge to area Senior Citizens to carry in their automobiles to be used in emergencies (the phones will only have access to emergency services, 911)

The Center also coordinates the Annual Senior Celebration of Achievement in the Spring. A luncheon for at least 400 area Senior Citizens is planned to include musical entertainment, door prizes, and an annual recognition program of area Senior Citizens’ accomplishments and contributions to the Portage County community. In 2007 the celebration will be held on April 24th, at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, in Rootstown.

Every October the center sponsors the Senior Citizen’s Harvest Ball, for 300 area Senior Citizens. This even includes musical entertainment, lunch and door prizes. The Harvest Ball is held at Access To Independence Hall in Ravenna.Craft Shop

CRAFT SHOP

The Center also sponsors a craft consignment shop for area Senior Citizens. The Shop is located on the first floor of the County Administration Building. Any area Senior Citizen can place items in the Shop on consignment, the crafter receives 85% of the selling price and the Senior Center receives 15% of the selling price.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICES

The Center Director also offers information and referral services for Senior Citizens and Care givers. A monthly newspaper column is printed in the area Newspaper, Record Courier on the first Friday of each month.
