by the United State Department of Agriculture and the Ohio
Department on Aging. The local Area Agency on Aging assists with
the local program.
The Farmers Market Senior Nutrition Program distributes $12.00
worth of vouchers to approximately 350 area Senior Citizens
during the months of June, July, August, September, and October. The vouchers can be used only at participating Farmers Markets:
Stahl’s, Hilgirts, Rufeners, Monroes Family Farm, Stotlers
Orchard,
and two participants at the Haymarket Saturday markets in Kent,
Chaykowski’s farm, and Richard Dirienzo’s Farm.
Area individuals who are least 60 years old, and who have an
income of no more that 185% of the poverty level are eligible
for the Farmer’s Market Program.
The Portage County Senior Services Center also sponsors “Safety Net”
program for all area Senior Citizens, regardless of income. Old, donated
cell phones are processed by Basic Communications in Streetsboro
(verified that they work, and that they have access to 911) The phones
are then given free of charge to area Senior Citizens to carry in their
automobiles to be used in emergencies (the phones will only have access
to emergency services, 911)
The Center also coordinates the Annual Senior Celebration of Achievement
in the Spring. A luncheon for at least 400 area Senior Citizens is
planned to include musical entertainment, door prizes, and an annual
recognition program of area Senior Citizens’ accomplishments and
contributions to the Portage County community. In 2007 the celebration
will be held on April 24th, at the Northeastern Ohio Universities
College of Medicine, in Rootstown.
Every October the center sponsors the Senior Citizen’s Harvest Ball, for
300 area Senior Citizens. This even includes musical entertainment,
lunch and door prizes. The Harvest Ball is held at Access To
Independence Hall in Ravenna.

shop for area Senior
Citizens. The Shop is located on the first floor of the County
Administration Building. Any area Senior Citizen can place items in
